Slinky History:

After trying to develop a meter used to keep track of the horsepower on modern Naval battleships, Richard James noticed the tension release of springs he was working with as he dropped them on the ground. The spring - sprung in a funny way.

in 1943 he stated "I think I can make a toy out of this", to his wife Betty. Betty, also a staple in what we now know, researched the name for this new toy. She noticed in Sweden, "Slinky" was a word meaning sinuous or traespiral-sleek.

The slinky was introduced during the 1945 Holiday season and again at the American Toy Fair the next year.

Doubting the success of the new toy, James may have not brought enough as they sold out of their first 400 units in the first 90 minutes of the exhibition. James knew he was on to something.

in 2001, Betty James was overdue as an inductee into the Toy industry Hall of Fame!
