Squirrels are Everywhere!

Since recorded history, Squirrels have seemingly adapted to all ways of life that mankind has presented to them. Living among us, tree squirrels able to feed naturally or from hand me outs. Socially accepted and even friendly with people in most cases; these small critters have found a way to make it, with - or without us.

Squirrel History:

Squirrels can be traced a far back as 50 million years. A North American fossil record has classified the squirrel to be a part of the Sciurus family. Considered to be a Rodential (rodent) in the Animal Kingdom.

It's name can traced to the other side of the world on the island of Greece. The Greeks followed the thoughts of Aristotle, a great leader, who first used words like "skiouros". Derived, it means 'shade' - and "oura", which stands for tail. So a loose translation would be "one who sits in the shadows of their own tails", a pretty accurate representation of the squirrels running around the trees in my neighborhood. The French gave the animal a word - "esquirel", and from that, we get what we know today as the modern Squirrel.

Over 365 species of squirrels live around the world. Squirrels are divided into families - (7) of them: including the Flying Squirrel, the Tree squirrel, and the Ground squirrel.

Familiar to us here in the United States is the Grey squirrel, probably the most prevalent squirrel in the Northern Hemisphere.  Their diets consist mainly of seeds, fruit, and nuts, but will most commonly forage anything it can find that's edible including trash, breads, and even meat. Average squirrels are about 15 inches long and weigh in at about a pound. Although most urban squirrels fail to reach their first birthdays due to any numbers of factors, mostly automobiles, the average life of the grey squirrel is about 6 years.

Other popular squirrels, Red squirrels, live in forested areas and are much smaller than the grays. Sitting only 8-10, this quick, agile squirrel is capable of accomplishing tasks as well as their larger counterparts.

Interesting Squirrel Facts:

- Squirrels attribute for about 40% of all the Planet's species. The 'Rodentia' Order has over 1650 species making it the largest group of mammals on Earth.

- Squirrels are not monogamous. Although the female will choose the strongest male for them for that season, it is unlikely she will mate with him again. This maybe one reasons squirrels have been around for so long, keeping natural inbreeding to a minimum, keeping the strength in the species.

- A baby squirrel is born with no hair or teeth and is virtually blind. They weigh about one ounce and are about one inch long.

- Squirrels come in all kinds of different colors. Most commonly Brown, Grey, and Tan squirrels, but also pitch black and all white squirrels exist.

- Unlike some other animals in the winter, a long stint of weather storms may keep the squirrel family in the tree for days, but tree squirrels do not hibernate.

- Strangely, adult squirrels like to live alone. Communally during cold weather, multiple squirrels will gather and huddle for heat, but find their ways alone after the warmer temperatures come back.

- Squirrels will eat animal carcasses if they cannot find their normal dietary needs.

- If you were to compare the size of their brain to a nut they eat - give them a Walnut.

- Each week, the average adult squirrel will eat about a pound of food.

- Squirrels communication is in-depth. Chirping, body language, and tail movements are the main for of communication. Chirping at frequencies between .01 KHz. and 10 KHz. (kilohertz).

- Squirrels have sweat glands on their feet. It is located between their toes and during excitement, squirrels will leave a wet footprint tail, used in nature to mark territory and sweating.

- When in danger of attack, squirrels will first appear motionless. When threatened, they will zag and run back into the attacker to fight the laws of physics. Unfortunately, automobiles are a predator to be reckoned with.

- The cleanest animal in the rodent family is the male squirrel who will take more than twice as long to groom themselves.

- Squirrels teeth can grow up to 6 inches a year. Because of repetitive gnawing and foaraging, some squirrels wonder if this is enough.

Squirrels in Comedy:

Animals and entertainment are often combined. On TV, in the movies, in books, and even in Comics in our daily papers. We're always looking for way to make animals appear a little more human, and because we have such a relationship with squirrels, and we think we know them so well, many comics include the devious or mischievous critters as the main subject. We all watched Chip and Dale and their antics when we were kids, and today's artist are still using the squirrel to get a laugh.
